Description:

The Clinical Safety Leader role at Alberta Health Services involves partnering with staff, physicians, and leaders to enhance patient safety practices and promote a culture of quality improvement. This position collaborates with patients and families to incorporate their perspectives into safety reviews and events. By utilizing systems thinking and Just Culture principles, the Clinical Safety Leader supports clinical teams in implementing safety programs and analyzing safety events to create safer care environments.

Reporting to the Manager, Patient Safety, this role works with site and program leaders to address safety issues and build a culture of safety. Responsibilities include analyzing patient safety data, identifying trends, and prioritizing risks to prevent harm. The Clinical Safety Leader also supports Quality Assurance Committees, leads quality assurance reviews, and develops patient safety education. Additionally, this role fosters psychologically safe environments for open discussions, learning, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with site and program leaders to address patient safety issues
  • Analyze patient safety data and prioritize risks
  • Support Quality Assurance Committees and lead quality assurance reviews
  • Develop and deliver patient safety education
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to create safety communications
  • Support organization-wide patient safety initiatives
  • Foster psychologically safe environments for discussions and learning
  • Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in a relevant discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years progressive experience in a healthcare environment
  • Demonstrated interest in patient safety
  • Strong understanding of health care systems and quality improvement
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline
  • Experience with safety reviews and quality improvement
  • Project management training
  • QHI Patient Safety Certificate or similar
  • Ability to travel within Calgary and South Corridors
