The Diabetes Nurse Educator functions as a member of the multidisciplinary team to provide coordination and integration of care, in-depth diabetes education, and clinical management to patients and families in the Endocrinology and Metabolism Program. Responsibilities include assessment, education, and ongoing follow-up of patients with complex diabetes, provision of education classes, navigation of diabetes services, and support for health care providers. The role requires working at least 3 days/week Monday-Friday 0800-1615 with short notice availability.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities, and populations
Utilize nursing processes through critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making
Teach, counsel, and advocate on behalf of patients and their families
Support an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion, and maintenance
Reflect the shared vision and values of AHS in providing safe, quality patient and family-centered care
Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program
Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification
Minimum of 800 hours experience within the last 3 years in direct client diabetes education/management OR current CDECB certification as a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE)
Minimum of 3 years acute care nursing experience required
Minimum of 1 year experience in an outpatient setting working with patients with diabetes and/or diabetes in pregnancy within the last 3 years
Evident knowledge of diabetes medications and ability to counsel patients on key safety topics required
Minimum typing speed of 45 wpm required
Advanced experience with insulin pump therapy preferred
